Bigfoot…On My iPhone…Makes Me Happy!

by

So I’ve been listening to a lot of Bigfoot podcasts lately. Betcha never heard anyone say that before.

My favorite one is SasWhat: A Podcast about Bigfoot. I like it because it has a good mixture of both the serious and not-so-serious sides of Bigfoot. That and I like the cricket sound effects that play in the background throughout the show. I find it soothing.

I also listen to Sasquatch Chronicles, Bigfoot Eyewitness Radio, and the Bigfoot Information Project Podcast. It’s an obsession, really. Even worse than my typewriter obsession.

Sorry, ladies, but I’m happily married.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “Val…what the hell’s the matter with you?” At least that’s what my wife is thinking. I appreciate your concern. Really, I do. But seriously, it’s cool. Bigfoot just makes me happy. In the World of Adulthood, of which I’m a reluctant member, things like mortgages and bills and chronic back pain and broken furnaces and prostate issues can really get a guy down. Listening to people talk about spooky, shadowy encounters with giant, hairy, man-like creatures stirs my imagination and helps me forget all of those boring adult issues, if just for a little while. It makes me feel like a kid again, back when anything was possible, when I didn’t have to worry about things like paying my taxes or remembering to trim my nose and ear hairs.

I’ll admit it, I haven’t been in the best mood lately (i.e., the past 6-9 months). I think it’s been due to a perfect storm of ongoing back pain combined with a midlife crisis and a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder. You know, typical, stupid, adult-type of stuff. I know it sounds crazy, but one of the few things that brings me any joy lately is listening to tales about Bigfoot. Trust me, there’s no better way to end the day with a nice glass of brandy, a cozy fire, and an episode of “Finding Bigfoot” on the tube. Pure heaven.

My kids are all into it, too, of course. The Animal is always incorporating Bigfoot into his doodles, and both he and Boogieface made me Bigfoot-themed cards for my birthday. I have to be careful around my boy, though. The other day he listened in on a podcast about a rare violent Sasquatch encounter, and later that night he was afraid to go up to bed. It took a while to assure him that, sadly, there are no Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) around our quiet little town. If only.

Last night I finally got around to watching “The Legend of Boggy Creek” (1972), which was many a Bigfooter’s introduction to the subject. Although a bit campy at times, it features just the right mixture of creepiness and mystery. And there’s also this great part where they actually make you feel sorry for the “creature” when they play the cheesy theme song for the film, which includes the following verse:

Perhaps he dimly wonders why,
There is no other such as I.
To touch, to love, before I die,
To listen to my lonely cry.

Aw, poor Bigfoot. I’m here for you, big guy.

Go ahead and laugh at me if you want. But trust me, I’ll be having the last laugh as soon as they find definitive proof that Sasquatch really do exist. It’s just a matter of time.

In the meantime I’ll continue to keep adulthood at bay and my imagination alive by following the hunt for that legendary hairy man of the forest. Now if you’ll excuse me, the hairy man of this household needs to go trim his eyebrows. ~
