In doing meditation, one of the things they always talk about is being mindful of your body and how it feels. Mine feels like its 80 years old. This writing stuff, turns out, is backbreaking work.
Seriously. I can’t remember a day when I didn’t have back pain. Most of the time it’s been upper back pain. But recently I’ve started to experience the joys of lower back pain. Heck, why let the upper back have all the fun?
And it’s all because of writing. Actually…scratch that. It’s all because of sitting. I like to sit while I’m writing. I’ve tried that standing desk stuff that’s all the rage nowadays, and I can attest that it really does help relieve back pain. But then my knees and hips started aching. So I figured, if I’m going to be in pain either way, might as well be in pain whilst sitting.
The problem is, I don’t know how to do anything else but write. If I’d have known it would end up causing me so much pain, I would’ve chosen another, less physically taxing career, like…um…well, I’m sure there’s something else less physically taxing. There has to be, right?
I think I’d enjoy doing something completely different. Something where I actually broke a sweat, got my fingers dirty, and finished the day with some tangible proof of my labors. Just today I walked outside to start my car, and some guys were across the street, in the middle of a rainstorm, building frames for a brand-new sidewalk, and I thought to myself, “Boy, those guys sure are dirty.” Then I went back inside and took a nap.
I doubt I’ll ever solve this back pain issue. I’ve tried it all—massage, chiropractic, acupuncture…you name it. But unfortunately they only work if you experience them regularly. And more unfortunately, they all cost money. And I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but writing isn’t the most lucrative of careers. At least not when you’re writing stuff like this.
So I guess I will just have to suck it up and work through the pain. My readers (all 3 of them) are counting on me. And, back be damned, I’m not about to let them down! ~
