Let’s Try Something New
by
I’ve decided that I really don’t write enough on here. I mean to. I plan to. But then nothing for weeks at a time. The problem is, I don’t always have something to write about. Sorta like right now. I usually like to wait until something noteworthy happens, like when The Animal destroys one of our kitchen appliances, or when Boogieface has one of her emotional meltdowns. Unfortunately these things don’t happen as much as I would hope.
So instead of waiting around for inspiration to strike, I’m just going to jump on here every once in a while and write about whatever comes to mind. It’s my blog, after all. I can write about whatever I want. No one’s going to read it anyway.
I thought I’d recap what I’ve done so far today and give you a glimpse into the glamorous life of the home-based freelance writer. So here goes…
- I rolled out of bed around 6:30, begrudgingly. I could’ve used a couple more hours, but I figured I should probably go downstairs and say hello to the kiddos before they headed off to school.
- While they ate their cereal, I threw yet another load of laundry in the wash. The 8,000th load this year. I don’t know how so many of you people have four, five kids. I feel like I’ve spent half my life cleaning out the dryer’s lint filter.
- After dropping the kids off at school, I came home, poured another cup of coffee, and then headed to my office to pretend to work again. Last week I had some type of mutant, monster-flu that kept me on the couch all week watching reruns of “American Pickers” on Netflix. I’m feeling 99% better now, but I think I’m going through couch withdrawal.
- After I spent an hour and a half or so going through emails, paying bills, and doing some general procrastination on the Internet, I decided I had done enough “work” for one morning. So I headed over to the local community college, where my talented friend Sam was putting on a one-man play about Robert Frost. It was a packed room, filled with current students who were probably required to be there, retirees who actually wanted to be there, and one other person, who was pretty much just trying to avoid doing any type of actual work.
- Now I’m back here at my desk again, writing this brilliant post and planning out my well-earned afternoon nap, which I’ve decided will begin in 10 minutes or so, right after I fold the laundry. Again. Isn’t it great being an adult?
I hope you’ve enjoyed this new experiment in blogging. If not, I understand. I didn’t enjoy it much either.
See you next time. ~

I don’t think I have what it takes to be a full-time writer, but I admire those who do. I’m convinced there’s something essential about having that daily discipline required to just sit down and get those words out. As for blogging, consistency is key, even if you don’t think it’s a worthwhile subject. The other thing I’ve learned is that, just when you don’t think anyone reads your blog, know that people do, even if they don’t always comment on every article.
Thanks, Joe. That’s definitely something I need to work on: consistency. ; )
Don’t be so hard on yourself… I read your blog. Good stuff (: Looks like that workshop got you fired up!
